Golden Gopher sophomore Alicia Rue opened her 2008 track season in grand fashion earning Co-Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week honors. Rue, a Plymouth, Minn., native, captured the victory in the pole vault at last Saturday?s season-opening Northwest Open. She cleared a personal indoor best of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches, an NCAA provisional qualifier and the second-best vault in school history.

This is the first weekly award for Rue, who won the Junior Pan American Games gold medal last summer.

Minnesota hosts its second indoor track meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 19, the Minnesota Open. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. at the University Fieldhouse.

Golden Gopher sophomore pole vaulter Alicia Rue claimed her second Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week award in as many weeks after smashing the Minnesota school record in the event in her last competition. Rue, a Plymouth, Minn., native, cleared 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches to win the pole vault at last Saturday?s Minnesota Open and better the previous school record by over three inches. The height also improved Rue?s NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Minnesota hosts its third consecutive home meet to open the 2008 season next weekend. The Jack Johnson Minnesota Invitational will be held on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 25-26, at the University Fieldhouse.

Alicia, keep up the good work!  If you PR every week they aren't going to know what to do.

See you Saturday!
