Ben Peterson Earns Big Ten Weekly Award
Minnesota senior Ben Peterson was named the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week after his winning performance in the pole vault at the Iowa State Classic last weekend. Peterson, the defending Big Ten champion, cleared a career-best height of 17 feet, 9 inches to mark the fifth-best vault in Gopher history. Peterson’s vault currently ranks first in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation this season.
This is the first Big Ten weekly award of Peterson’s career and second for the Gophers during the 2011 indoor season.
Minnesota hosts the Snowshoe Open on Friday, the Gophers’ final tune-up for the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Minnesota senior pole vaulter Samantha Sonnenberg earned a share of the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week award for her performance last weekend at the Iowa State Classic. Sonnenberg shared this week’s honor with Michigan State thrower Beth Rohl.
Sonnenberg won the title at the Iowa State Classic, clearing a season-best height of 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches. The mark is currently the top vault in the Big Ten this season.
This is Sonnenberg’s first career Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week award.
Minnesota hosts the Parents’ Day Open on Saturday. the Gophers’ final tune-up for the Big Ten Championships.
