Gophers in First, Mead and Studt Win Titles
With 2008 Big Ten champion Ben Peterson out with an injury, junior Joe Plencner provided a big lift with a runner-up finish in the pole vault. Plencner cleared a career-best height of 17-4 1/2, matching the sixth-highest vault in school history and recording an NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Brock Spandl finished in a tie for fifth place with a height of 16-8 3/4.
Congratulations to the Minnesota Gopher Men and Women who both won Big Ten indoor team titles!

Gophers men and women sweep up at Big Tens
The U women won their third consecutive conference title, relying on depth in a meet that came down to the final event. The men earned their second indoor title and first since 1998.
The Gophers swept the Big Ten indoor track and field championships on Sunday, the first time teams from the same school have won both the men's and women's titles since Wisconsin in 1997.
The Gophers women's team, competing in Bloomington, Ind., won the conference title for the third consecutive year. The men, competing at State College, Pa., won the conference for the second time. They also won it in 1998.
The Gophers women finished with 129 points to edge Penn State (125) and Michigan (121 1/2).
"Depth was the difference," coach Matt Bingle said. "This was a great team effort."
For the second year in a row, the champion was decided in the meet's final event, the 4x400-meter relay. Minnesota entered the race 5 1/2 points ahead of Michigan and nine points in front of Penn State. Penn State won the race, but the Gophers iced the team title by finishing fourth.
The Gophers' Heather Dorniden won the mile run in a time of 4 minutes, 43.71 seconds, then just 50 minutes later added the title in the 600 meters in a meet record time of 1:27.78. Dorniden ended the day anchoring the 4x400 relay.
Mead leads Gophers men
Hassan Mead led the Gophers men, who had three individual champions on the way to finishing with 135 points.
"Coming into this meet we thought we had a very good chance of contending for the title, but you still need your guys to go out and perform," Gophers coach Steve Plasencia said. "They not only went out and competed, but our guys had very strong performances across the board. I think our heptathletes got us started and we just keep the hammer down."
Mead won the 5,000 meters in a school record time of 13 minutes, 58.16 seconds, adding that title to his crown in the 3,000 meters on Saturday.
Mead is the Gophers' first double individual event champion at the Big Ten indoor championships since Benjamin Jensen won the pole vault and heptathlon in 1999.
In this year's heptathlon, R.J. McGinnis captured his first Big Ten title with 5,431 points. Minnesota athletes finished first, second, third and eighth in the event to tally 25 team points.
Matt Fisher also won his first Big Ten title, clearing 7 feet, 3 inches in the high jump without missing a single attempt.
With Aaron Studt's victory on Saturday in the shot put, the Gophers men finished with five individual titles.
