Gophers sophomore Alicia Rue set a school record in winning the indoor pole vault at Saturday's Minnesota Open at the University Fieldhouse.
Rue cleared 13 feet, 5? inches, topping the previous record by more than three inches. Three vaulters cleared 13 feet, including previous record-holder Andrea Smith, who took third at 13-1 1/2. Rue and Smith became NCAA provisional qualifiers.
In the men's pole vault, freshman Brock Spandl and sophomore Ben Peterson both cleared 16-8 1/2, but Spandl won on fewer misses.

Golden Gopher sophomore Alicia Rue won the pole vault at the Minnesota Open on Saturday, clearing 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches to smash the previous school record by over three inches. Rue thrived on the competition at the meet that featured three vaulters better 13 feet. Andrea Smith, who held the old Minnesota record at 13-1 3/4, neared her career best mark by placing third with a vault of 13-1 1/2. Both Rue?s and Smith?s marks are NCAA provisional qualifiers.
