Brock Spandl Sets Freshman Record in the Heptathlon

Redshirt freshman Brock Spandl collected 5,206 points to place second and set a Minnesota freshman record at the Jack Johnson Minnesota Invitational on Saturday at the University Fieldhouse. Former Gopher field event standout and multiple Big Ten champion Derek Gearman won the event with 5,495 points.

Spandl fell just 94 points short of an NCAA provisional standard while competing in his first collegiate heptathlon. On the second day, Spandl ran a time of 8.54 seconds in the 60-meter high hurdles, cleared 16 feet, 5 3/4 inches in the pole vault (a height that would have won the individual pole vault event) and finished with a time of 2 minutes, 54.14 seconds in the 800-meter run.

Sophomores Ben Peterson and Joe Plencner went 1-2 in the pole vault, both clearing 16-5 1/2 but Peterson taking first with less missed attempts. David Gierut and Andy Lindberg tied for third with efforts of 15-7 3/4.

In the men's pole vault, freshman Brock Spandl and sophomore Ben Peterson both cleared 16-8 1/2, but Spandl won on fewer misses.

Golden Gopher sophomore Alicia Rue opened her 2008 track season in grand fashion earning Co-Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week honors. Rue, a Plymouth, Minn., native, captured the victory in the pole vault at last Saturday?s season-opening Northwest Open. She cleared a personal indoor best of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches, an NCAA provisional qualifier and the second-best vault in school history.

This is the first weekly award for Rue, who won the Junior Pan American Games gold medal last summer.

Minnesota hosts its second indoor track meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 19, the Minnesota Open. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. at the University Fieldhouse.

Just like our summer camps, attendees will received a high level of coaching that will challenge them to work to improve their technique so that they can excel in the upcoming competitive season.

We will be offering six week training sessions one night a week on Wednesday or Sunday night for vaulters of all ability levels from beginner to elite.  
Each session will start at 5:00pm or 7:00pm on the respective night.

The Saturday 5pm sessions are as follows:

The Sunday 5pm sessions are as follows:

Poles will be included.  Due to MSHSL rules you cannot jump on your schools poles in the off-season.

Each camp will be limited to 10 athletes.

No makeup days will be allowed.

The cost for each six week session is $200.
If you sign up for two sessions the cost for both is $375 (savings of $25)
If you sign up for all three sessions the cost for all three is $550 (savings of $50)

Camp Coaches:
Chris Milton (Armstrong HS) will be coaching the Wednesday sessions.
Chris has coached 9 all state performances and 14 state qualifiers since he began coaching at Armstrong in 2002. Most notably, he coached the 2005 and 2006 girls state AA pole vault champion to an all time state meet record of 12-9 and a personal best of 13-3. Chris graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2001 with a BA in computer science. While at St. Thomas under the guidance of Kyle Cleven, Chris was a three time MIAC conference pole vault champion and placed second three times. Before St. Thomas, Chris attended Minneapolis Washburn HS where he qualified for the state meet twice and was all state his senior year. Chris has a lifetime personal best of 16-0 in 2004. He is also USATF Level 1 Certified. Chris is currently working as a senior systems engineer at Target Corporation in Minneapolis.

Coach's Bio

Chris Milton, Armstrong High School Pole Vault Coach.  Chris has coached at least one all state athlete in each season since he began coaching in 2002(9 total).  Most notably, he coached the 2005 and 2006 girls state AA pole vault champion to an all time state meet record of 12-9 and a personal best of 13-3.  Chris graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2001 with a BA in computer science.  While at St. Thomas under the guidance of Kyle Cleven, Chris was a three time MIAC conference pole vault champion and finished second three times.  Before St. Thomas Chris attended Minneapolis Washburn where he qualified for the state meet twice and was all state his senior year.  Chris has a lifetime personal best of 16-0 in 2004.  He is also USATF Level 1 Certified.  Chris is currently working as a software engineer for a mortage technology company in Edina.
